What FARM JACK (SX FARM JACK) jacks are for and how to use them
FARM JACK (often known as the 'Hi-Lift' jack) is a versatile lever-operated mechanical jack used not only for lifting but also for recovery, tensioning, pulling and various assembly tasks. SIXTOL offers two variants of lever jacks SX FARM JACK with a 3T capacity – in this article you’ll find a brief overview of the models, practical tips on when to choose which model and how to work with them safely.
1) Which FARM JACKs you’ll find at SIXTOL (order codes)
SIXTOL SX FARM JACK M 3T, 130–1045 mm
- Order code: SX3086.
- Load capacity 3,000 kg.
- Lifting range 130 to 1045 mm.
- Suitable for off-road, SUV, tractors, trailers and agricultural machinery – useful for lifting as well as for recovery, tensioning and pulling (e.g. posts).
SIXTOL SX FARM JACK L 3T, 130–1320 mm
- Order code: SX3087.
- Load capacity 3,000 kg.
- Lifting range 130 to 1320 mm (extra long stroke).
- Suitable for higher-terrain vehicles, vans and tractors – thanks to the greater lift it’s useful where you need more height; it can also be used as a tensioning device, recovery tool or spacer wedge.
Accessory tip: For work on soft ground (sand, mud, gravel) a stabilizing base plate for the lever jack MECHANIC BASE 1 (SX3066) is useful – it improves stability and reduces the risk of the jack sinking into the surface. The SX3066 pad is not included with the SX FARM JACKs.
2) How to choose the right FARM JACK
A) The deciding factor is the height you need
Both versions have a 3T capacity – the main difference is the stroke. If you lift taller vehicles or need extra lift reserve (e.g. in off-road, with vans or tractors), choose SX3087. For general use and easier carrying, SX3086 is often sufficient.
B) Where you will use the jack (and what you will lift)
Common scenarios where a FARM JACK is useful:
- Off-road: lifting a vehicle in rough terrain, recovering from snow or mud, jacking up to place supports under the wheels.
- Agriculture and forestry: lifting trailers, machines, assisting with assembly/service in the field.
- Construction and assembly: spreading/moving heavy elements, fine pulling/tensioning of structures.
- Farm/yard: pulling posts, tensioning fencing, pulling loads.
C) What lifting point you have available
A FARM JACK needs a solid point for the lifting foot to 'bite' into (e.g. frame, bull bar, dedicated lifting points, rock slider etc.). On ordinary passenger cars without modifications there often isn’t a safe point for a FARM JACK – in those cases a classic hydraulic jack is usually the better choice.
3) How to use a FARM JACK correctly (practical procedure)
Step 1: Prepare the area and secure the vehicle
Work on as level and firm a surface as possible. Apply the parking brake, engage a gear/park mode and use wheel chocks. Securing the vehicle is key so the lifted object cannot move unexpectedly.
Step 2: Position the jack stably (use the pad in soft terrain)
The base must sit firmly without wobbling. On soft ground use the stabilizing base plate SX3066 – it improves stability and reduces the risk of the base sinking in.
Step 3: Choose the correct lifting point and align the jack vertically
The jack’s foot must be supported on a solid point and the jack must stand vertically. FARM JACKs have a long stroke – if it starts to tilt, stop work and realign everything.
Step 4: Lifting with the lever – smoothly, without rushing
Lift smoothly in steps. Once you reach the required height, always support the vehicle or load (stands, blocks, stable supports). A FARM JACK is a lifting device – it is not intended as long-term support.
Step 5: Lowering – the riskiest part (beware of the handle 'kick')
When lowering, keep the handle firmly under control. With lever jacks the handle can suddenly 'kick' when released (rebound). Always keep your head and body out of the handle’s path and lower in steps.
4) What a FARM JACK can do (not only lifting)
Besides lifting, lever jacks are used for:
- Recovery: lifting a vehicle and placing supports (rocks, traction boards) so it can get out of mud/snow.
- Pulling/tensioning: temporary tensioning of fencing, pulling a structure together, aligning elements.
- Extracting posts: the jack can help 'pull out' a post or stake if you have a solid point and a tie-in.
- Spreading: gently pushing apart or creating a gap during assembly (use common sense and securing).
Note: When using as a 'winch'/towing tool always think about safety: use appropriate chain/strap, protect against snapping and never stand in the line of pull.
5) Quick safety checklist
- Secure the vehicle (chocks, brake) and work on as firm a surface as possible.
- Use a solid lifting point – on many unmodified cars there isn’t a suitable point.
- After lifting always support the load – the jack is not a stand.
- Lower slowly and keep the handle always under control.
- On rough terrain use the pad (SX3066) – stability is fundamental.
6) Maintenance and storage
A FARM JACK is mechanical – it benefits from regular cleaning and lubrication. After work in mud or dust clean it, check the mechanism and occasionally lightly lubricate moving parts. Store it so it is not exposed for long periods to moisture and aggressive contaminants.
7) Final recommendation
Want a versatile farm jack for off-road, farm and general terrain use? Choose SX3086. If you need an extra-long stroke and more lift reserve, go for SX3087. And if you often work in rough terrain, add the SX3066 pad – it will significantly increase confidence and safety.
