How to correctly choose and use a trailer jack (SX3088 and SX3089)

A trailer jack (trailer jack) is used for convenient lifting and stabilizing the trailer tongue, cart or caravan – typically when disconnecting from the towing vehicle, during loading, while parking and also when changing a wheel. In the SIXTOL range you will find two robust welded variants: SX3089 (900 kg, flat flange) and SX3088 (2.2 t, tubular design with a weld-on eye).

1) How to choose the correct trailer jack

A) Capacity – determined by the vertical load on the tongue ("nose weight")

The most common mistake when choosing is comparing the jack capacity to the total weight of the trailer. A trailer jack typically carries mainly the vertical load on the tongue. Therefore choose a jack with sufficient margin relative to the actual load that occurs on the tongue during loading and parking.

Practical guide:

  • smaller trailers, common carts and lighter caravans: 900 kg capacity (SX3089) is often sufficient
  • heavier caravans and cargo/utility trailers, larger margins needed: choose 2.2 t (SX3088)

B) Mounting type – how you weld the jack to the frame

The second main criterion is the method of attachment to the trailer frame. Both models are designed for permanent installation by welding, but differ in mounting construction:

  • SX3089 – flat welded mounting flange (secure and stable flat attachment)
  • SX3088 – tubular design with a weld-on eye (attachment via an eye to the frame)

C) Height and lifting range – to reach the coupling and stable support

Check how high you need to lift the tongue and how low the jack needs to lower. This is especially important for caravans, boat trailers and trailers with a high tongue.

3) How to use the trailer jack correctly (step by step)

A) Safe parking and disconnecting the trailer

Park on the most level and solid surface possible. Engage the trailer parking brake (if equipped).

Secure the wheels with chocks (at least one wheel). For caravans secure both sides.

Lower the jack onto the ground so the base sits flat.

Turn the handle to raise the tongue, relieve the towing device and safely disconnect the coupler.

After disconnecting, fine-tune the height so the trailer stands stably and does not rock.

B) Stabilization during loading / unloading

During loading the weight distribution changes and the tongue can "drop" or lift. The jack is then a great support, but always operate smoothly and keep the trailer secured against movement.

C) Wheel change – how to do it safely

The trailer jack can help when changing a wheel, but keep safety in mind: never go under the trailer and do not attempt to lift from inappropriate points. If you lift the trailer for a wheel, use a solid surface, chocks and ideally also supports.

Recommended procedure:

  • secure the wheels with chocks and loosen the wheel bolts while still on the ground
  • lift so the structure is stable – and check that the jack base does not sink
  • after changing the wheel lower the trailer smoothly and tighten the bolts according to the trailer manufacturer's recommendations

4) Installation and installation recommendations

SX3088 and SX3089 are intended for permanent installation by welding. Always entrust welding to an experienced person – this concerns operational safety.

During installation pay attention especially to:

  • enough space for turning the handle (operator ergonomics)
  • that the jack in the folded position does not restrict approach, scrape on terrain or interfere when turning
  • firm, even seating of the base on the ground; use a support plate on softer surfaces

5) Maintenance and service life

To keep the jack lasting long and easy to operate:

  • regularly clean the thread and moving parts from dirt and salt
  • occasionally lightly lubricate the thread/sliding parts (thin layer of lubricant)
  • check for a bent handle or damaged mechanism
  • for trailers stored outdoors a more resistant design is beneficial – SX3088 has a galvanized inner part

6) Quick recommendation: which model to choose?

Choose SX3089 if:

  • you are looking for a solid welded jack with a flat flange and 900 kg capacity for common trailers/carts
  • you want a stable flat base and a simple solution for parking and loading

Choose SX3088 if:

  • you need higher capacity (2.2 t) and a larger lifting range (up to 730 mm)
  • you have a caravan or heavier trailer and want a robust tubular design with a weld-on eye Ø 50 mm

Safety note: Before use always check that the trailer is secured against movement and the jack stands on solid ground. If you are unsure about the correct procedure or installation, contact a professional service.
