The optical refractometer for measuring alcohol by volume is used for measuring fruit brandies such as plum brandy, apricot brandy, etc., and similar distilled spirits such as whisky, bourbon, vodka, gin, etc. A refractometer is an instrument for measuring the refractive index of a light beam and can thus be used to determine the composition of liquid mixtures or the purity of substances. It is not suitable for measuring alcohol in liqueurs, wine, or beer. It serves as an aid when distilling fruit brandies or mead, etc. If the volume of the distillate in liters and the alcohol by volume measured by the refractometer are known, then the volume of pure alcohol in liters can be calculated by multiplying the two values and dividing the result by 100.

Measurement method:

• Measuring with the refractometer is very simple: place a drop of the sample on the angled optical prism of the instrument, close the prism cover (the liquid spreads), wait a few seconds for the temperatures of the drop and the refractometer to equalize, look toward the light through the eyepiece, adjust focus if necessary, and read the alcohol by volume value on the appropriate scale. After measurement, clean the optical prism and cover thoroughly with a damp and then dry cloth. For accurate measurement it is necessary to maintain the reference temperature of 20 °C.
