Refractometer for measuring water content in honey ATC 25.
A quality optical instrument / refractometer
for honey with automatic temperature compensation is designed for easy, quick and accurate measurement of water content in honey in the range 13 % – 25 % with a resolution of 0.1 %. A refractometer is an instrument
for measuring the refractive index of a light beam and can thus determine the composition of liquid mixtures or the purity of substances. This refractometer is used wherever it is necessary to determine the
quality of honey, i.e. the water content in honey, e.g. according to Council Directive 2001/110/EC, European Parliament and Council Directive 2014/63/EU, Decree No. 76/2003 Coll., Decree No. 148/2015 Coll., Union quality standard No. ČSV 1/1999
for obtaining the ČESKÝ MED label, etc. Reference temperature 20°C; the refractometer and the honey should have a temperature close to 20°C during measurement for highest accuracy. ATC / automatic temperature compensation system (no calibration required at temperatures from 0°C to 30°C).
Main advantages:- Compact device size
- The device requires no battery and needs no assembly
- The body of the device is made of a lightweight and durable special aluminum alloy
- Part of the device is fitted with a soft rubber cover for comfortable handling
- Requires practically no maintenance
- High operational reliability and long service life.
- Large, easy-to-read scale
- Small deviation and high measurement accuracy
Measurement method:- Measuring honey with the refractometer is very simple: place a drop of honey on the angled optical prism of the instrument, close the prism cover (the honey spreads), look toward the light through the eyepiece of the instrument, adjust focus if necessary, and read the water content on the scale. The value can be read immediately in the field of view according to the boundary between the illuminated and non-illuminated areas.
Calibration:- For calibration proceed as follows: Clean the blue surface of the refractometer prism preferably with distilled water and an optical cloth. Open the cover on the refractometer and keep it open for the whole procedure. Using the pipette, place 1 drop of the calibration solution onto the blue prism of the refractometer (approximately in the center). Then gently place the small calibration prism onto the blue surface of the refractometer covering the drop of calibration solution – approximately in the center so that the drop spreads evenly beneath it without any dry spots or bubbles. The solution must not extend beyond the area under the calibration prism. Wait approximately 30 seconds. You should then see the upper part of the window blue and the lower part light – their boundary should pass through the reference line printed on the calibration solution. If it does not, carefully adjust the alignment screw with the screwdriver to line it up to this point.
